At the Disruption of 1843, the missionaries in India of the Church of Scotland and in Kaffraria of the Glasgow Missionary Society adhered, almost without exception, to the Free Church. New missions were later founded in Nagpur (1845), Jaina (1855), Santalia (1871), Livingstonia (1875), and Aden (1886). The union in 1876 with the Reformed Presbyterian Church brought with it the New Hebrides mission.

The United Free Church of Scotland was formed from the union of the United Presbyterian Church with the Free Church of Scotland in 1900. In 1919 the United Free Church took over the Gold Coast mission of the Basler Evangelische Missionsgesellschaft.

At the beginning of the volume is inserted a letter of James Ballantine, glass painter and song writer to the Dean of the Faculty of Advocates, 1865, giving an extract of John Castle`s will 1864, bequeathing the manuscript to the Advocates` Library. At the back of the volume are recorded financial statements concerning the monument. The rest of the volume is comprised of copies of reports, minutes of meetings and correspondence, 1832-1853.

With the exception of MS.8455, these volumes of printed correspondence were prepared by James Stuart in answer to the accusations raised against him. The contents duplicate to a large extent letters recorded elsewhere in the catalogue. The majority of the volumes contain manuscript indexes and abstracts, and manuscript marginal notes.

Deeds, [1509], relating to the Temple lands of Lhanbryd; minutes, 1509, of the Sheriff`s Court which determined in favour of the claims laid to them by William Dumbreck of Barmuckity; and procuratory of resignation, 1610, by William Dumbreck of Orton to Alexander Innes of Coxton and Mr John Innes of Haltoun, of the same lands, with charter following thereon.

The papers comprise formal documents, correspondence, memorials, etc. (including many private papers), concerning legal actions raised by or against family members or their trustees. Most processes, unless described otherwise, relate mainly to disputes with tenants about debts, the terms of tacks, and other complications of tenancy.

The secretary during this period was the Reverend Joseph Laurie.

Three folios have been lost at the beginning, and the end is also incomplete.

Inverted at the end of the letter-book is a minute, 1825, of a meeting in Bombay.

The correspondence and papers include material concerning Bencoolen, Goa, Iran, Sind, Indonesia, Afghanistan and Tahiti, various surveys, and literary and scientific subjects.

With circa 1000 Hibernian Football Club match programmes, photographs, 27 scrapbooks, fanzines and epherma, 1933-93, of and relating to Hibernian FC and Scottish football in general.

The bulk of this material covers the dispute between the 4th Earl (later Marquess) of Breadalbane and his neighbours over the construction of the road on the south side of the Tay through the Taymouth estate in 1824-1825. Also included are minutes of meetings of the Road Trustees, and papers concerning the erection of tolls.
