Education and professional training, ca.1933-1952 and undated
Notebooks and notes, largely unsorted, dating from Farquhar Macintosh's school and university and teacher training years. Subjects covered are mainly history and education.
Gaelic notebooks, ca. 1950-1970
Eleven notebooks on subjects concerning Gaelic literature and culture, folk traditions and Highland life. Most of the contents are written in Gaelic. The notebooks are undated, but the majority bear the name of Glasgow Academy, where Macintosh began to teach in 1953, and were probaby compiled between that year and the late 1960s. Some of the notes can be dated to the 1960s due their link to Macintosh's activity as a contributor to newspaper columns.
Highland economy and education, ca. 1965-1966
Notebook containing notes and drafts of letters sent to newspapers on Highland economy and landlords, and education in Highland schools. With newspaper cuttings and a letter of Capt. J. Harvey Macpherson loosely inserted. Begun from both ends, with the text begun from the back entered in reverse page order.

Notebook headed "Gaelic Medical Lore", containing word lists and notes on Gaelic medical knowledge and beliefs. Begun from both ends. The text beginning at the back end is entered without first turning the notebook upside down, so that the order of pages is back to front.
Notebooks from Macintosh's school years at Portree High School, ca. 1934-1939
Four notebooks from Macintosh's school days. One is dated from his first and second years at Portree High School, the others are undated. Apart from a section on English grammar, rare words and metre, the notebooks all cover the subject of history.
Notes and article drafts on various Highland-related subjects, ca. 1950-1970
Notebook in Gaelic and English containing drafts of speeches and of articles probably for publication as newspaper columns. There are also notes on a variety of other subjects concerning Highland history and traditions. One of the pieces (folio 22v)concerns the recent death of the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Macleod (d. 1955). 30 folios. The text on folios 22v-30v begins at the back of the volume and the pages are written on in reverse order.
