This early version, titled 'The Stranger turns', differs considerably from the published text: it is written in three parts, each of which has a foreword discussing the character of the heroine (folios l, 127, 408); some of the passages and chapters are in a different order; and the names of some characters were changed in the published version. Chapter 9 (chapter 5 of the published text) is a later insertion (folio 97).

Folios 1-28, 47-55 and 69-72 correspond to pages 13-42 of the published text, but the end of the author's note is missing. The rest of the typescript was not published. (ii) Manuscript of six chapters which were omitted from the published version (folio 73). Three leaves are missing after folio 104.
