Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: Critic and writer on Spain, Richard Ford (1796-1858) was the author of one of the most notable editions of the Murray Handbooks - 'Handbook for Travellers in Spain'. In addition to this work, Ford also contributed articles for the 'Quarterly Review' and wrote other books relating to Spain, most of which were published by John Murray.There are over 200 letters here of Ford, mainly to John Murray [III], which include information relating to his works, his family and his opinions...

MSS.7443-7445 are written in German, having been delivered on George Combe's tour in Germany in 1842.

The phrenological reports (MSS.7452-7455) comprise the phrenological measurements of many persons, both well-known and obscure, with reports and descriptions of their mental capabilities and weaknesses.

The papers of Cecilia Combe contain a selection of literary efforts, diaries of tours, and the usual memoranda and inventories kept by nineteenth-century housewives.

Scope and Contents From the Series: Sir Charles Dalrymple (1839-1916), formerly Fergusson, was the youngest son of Sir Charles Dalrymple Fergusson, 5th Baronet, of Kilkerran. He succeeded to the estates of Hailes on the death of his father in 1849, when he assumed the name of Dalrymple. He was created a baronet in 1887, and a Privy Councillor in 1905.
