This series contains manuscripts and typescripts of, and associated working papers for, novels, short stories, and other creative works by Ian Rankin. Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: Hugh MacDiarmid originally planned four volumes of this immensely long poem, but only one, ‘In memoriam James Joyce’, (Glasgow, 1955), was published. Parts of the rest appeared in periodicals or in later collections of Hugh MacDiarmid's poems. These papers contain numerous drafts and re-workings of sections of the poem, made over a period of many years. Most of Sydney Goodsir Smith's poems in Scots were published in literary periodicals and in several small volumes of his poetry. His 'Collected poems, 1941-1975' (London, 1975), contains a selection of his work and not the whole corpus.

William Soutar's output of work, most of it produced during the last thirteen bed-ridden years of his life, is quite remarkable. Scope and Contents From the Series: Nina, Countess of Minto was the daughter of General Sir Thomas Hislop and granddaughter of Hugh Elliot. Lady Minto's papers reflect her wide ranging interests. She was the author of ‘A memoir of the Right Honourable Hugh Elliot’, of ‘Life and letters of Sir Gilbert Elliot, First Earl of Minto, from 1751-1806’, and of ‘Life and letters of Sir Gilbert Elliot, First Earl of Minto, from 1807-14’. Charles Murray's literary output was almost entirely poetic, and he was widely known as 'Hamewith', the title of his most popular collection, first published in 1900. These papers reflect both his literary work and his early travels in South Africa.

Scope and Contents

Pages of "Blackwood's Magazine", November 1855, containing Laurence Oliphant's article, 'The eastern shores of the Black Sea', and press-cuttings from Oliphant's articles in 'The Times' have been incorporated into the manuscript, with emendations and additions.

Also included (folio 223) are corrected pages of Oliphant's pamphlet, ‘The coming campaign', with page proofs of an introduction, printed as an appendix to the second edition of ‘The Trans-Caucasian campaign’.
