Charles Murray's literary output was almost entirely poetic, and he was widely known as 'Hamewith', the title of his most popular collection, first published in 1900. These papers reflect both his literary work and his early travels in South Africa.
Manuscript and page-proofs of parts of ‘Better dead’, Sir James Matthew Barrie's first book, published at his own expense in November 1887.
Manuscript of chapter I (folios 1-11) and page-proofs of chapter I and part of chapter II (folios 12-19 verso). There are considerable differences between the texts of the manuscript and the proof, the latter being generally condensed. There are two corrections in the page-proof (folio 15 verso) which are incorporated into the final text.

Also included (folio 223) are corrected pages of Oliphant's pamphlet, ‘The coming campaign', with page proofs of an introduction, printed as an appendix to the second edition of ‘The Trans-Caucasian campaign’.

Robert McLellan (1907-1985) was born near Lanark and educated at Bearsden and Glasgow University. In 1938 he married and moved to Arran, where he spent the rest of his life, except for a period of service in the Royal Artillery, 1940-1946. His most important literary works were plays, but he also wrote poetry, short stories, and books on Arran.

Born in Whithorn and educated at St Andrews, Alastair Reid lived in Spain and Latin America for many years, translating from Spanish as well as writing his own poetry and prose. His papers reflect these different kinds of work.
