Some items have dates or may be dated between 1911 and 1929, but most are undated, of the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.

The contents are as follows: (i) Correspondence, chiefly with George Chalmers, and notes, on antiquarian topics, 1799- 1815, undated (folio 1); (ii) Papers, 1741-1803, undated, concerning the Ellice family, consisting of typed biographical accounts (some incomplete) and copies of portraits of members of the family (folio 75); (iii) A small quantity of unrelated papers, 1844-1921, undated, found loosely enclosed in other parts of the collection (folio 216).
Music books and papers of Robert Moir (died 1869), who was President of the Edinburgh Church-Music Society and subsequently Conductor of Music at St Magnus' Cathedral, Kirkwall.

The letters, which were collected for their autograph interest, are chiefly on army administrative matters, but a few concern military conditions and contemporary events.

The main sources have apparently been the Reports of the Historical Manuscripts Commission, but original manuscripts, particularly those owned by the Duke of Buccleuch, seem also to have been consulted. Many of the manuscripts have been transcribed at length. The subjects dealt with are the private and public interests of the Queensberry family; there are several notes on furnishings, with particular reference to pictures, and reproductions of portraits have been laid down throughout.

The pen is inscribed ‘Sir Walter Scott's pen given to Maria Edgeworth, August 14th 1825’.
There is also a small framed portrait of Sir Walter Scott's daughter, Sophia Lockhart, by Watson, 1823, also given to Maria Edgeworth, at Abbotsford.
