Correspondence of Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe., 1826, 1831-1845, undated.
The correspondence is principally with James Maidment, on literary and historical matters, some scandalous, and with John Stevenson, his publisher. There are also copies of letters of Sir Walter Scott to Sharpe, in the latter's hand, 1826, undated; extracts, etc., in Sharpe's hand; a biographical note on Sharpe (folio 235); and newspaper-cuttings relating to him.

Mostly letters of John Layard, with carbon copies of some letters of David Thomson. David Thomson originally contacted Layard in relation to his work on hares, and a close corresponding friendship developed. The file also contains some related letters, including a number concerning an attempt to find suitable accommodation in London for John Layard.

The correspondence consists almost entirely of letters and telegrams sent by Nigel Keppel Charteris to his mother, Lady Louisa Charteris, of Hingham, Norfolk. The main events in which Lieutenant Charteris was involved were the defence of Wepener, and the surrender of General Prinsloo with four thousand Boers, in 1900. The letters are interspersed with contemporary press-cuttings relevant to the campaign, mainly from 'The Times'.

Also included is a lock of horse hair from the tail of 'Alma', the horse ridden by George Brown in to the Battle of Alma, 21 September 1854.
