Scope and Contents

The text is preceded by a large drawing in colour (most of the silver in which is oxidized) of the royal arms of England (impaled with those of St George) and of Scotland (folio ii verso). The preface and the first of the statutes are introduced by large illuminated initials and the remainder by small gold initials within alternate red and blue squares. Lacking the seal formerly attached to the cords visible at folios 1 and 18 verso.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

The collection consists of manuscripts on a wide variety of subjects, many copied from manuscript or printed works, and chiefly dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Among them are some account-books, diaries, and other manuscripts of family interest (including a few concerning the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, father of the 6th Marchioness of Lothian), but very few letters.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The papers cover six centuries worth of family and estate papers of the Forbes, the Stuart Forbes, and the Trefusis families. Alexander de Forbes (c.1380-1448) was created the 1st Lord Forbes around 1440, the Lords Forbes of Pitsligo were descended from Sir William Forbes, brother of Alexander. Compared with the French text printed in the appendix to `The Institution, Laws and Ceremonies of the most noble Order of the Garter`, this copy has, in addition to frequent minor variations, large differences in section 25 (=XXIV), and sections 24, 26-28 do not appear in the printed text at all.
