Scope and Contents Murray's 'Hanbooks for Travellers' series was begun in 1836 by John Murray III, after his own experiences of travelling on the continent.This was a time when improved transport links and increased leisure time were making foreign travel increasingly easy and popular. Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: The rector of Booton, Whitwell Elwin (1816-1900), was also a prolific writer. He produced works on Alexander Pope, John Forster and Lord Byron, as well as being a frequent contributor to the 'Quarterly Review', becoming editor of that periodical from 1853-1860.
