Apart from the plays written specially for radio, such as ‘The Carlin Moth’ and 'As ithers see us', Robert McLellan also wrote a number of short pieces, often as part of a larger series. Many of these were broadcasts for schools. He also contributed to programmes such as 'Scottish Life and Letters', and wrote for television.

The papers consist of thirty-six sets of loose-leaf quarto sheets, each corresponding to a published volume. Each set has clearly been copied from earlier versions of the poems, and, in some cases, is the final copy used by the publisher.

Scope and Contents From the Series:

Born in New Zealand and educated in England, Sydney Goodsir Smith's first poems were in English, but he began writing in Scots in about 1940 and published several volumes of poetry. He also wrote for the stage, radio and television, as well as editing works of Robert Burns and Robert Fergusson. All these interests are reflected in his papers, but his work as an art critic survives in only a few fragmentary items.
