The papers here concern legal and financial matters between Irving and the publishing house of Murray. The legal instruments concern the copyrights of works by Washington Irving while the financial instruments are mainly in relation to payments that Murray made to Irving.

Scope and Contents Author Washington Irving (1783-1859) had many of his most famous works published in Britain by John Murray, including 'Sketch book of Geoffrey Canon', which includes the stories of 'Rip Van Winkle' and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'.The holdings here reflect the business and personal relationship between Irving and the house of Murray.
