Scope and Contents

Folios 1-44 are printed in full in 'Letters and documents relating to Robert Erskine, physician to Peter the Great, Czar of Russia, 1677-1720', edited by Robert Paul, in 'Miscellany of the Scottish History Society', volume ii, pages 371-430 (see MS.5162). Documents of Russian origin quoted by Paul, such as a passport and a charter signed by the Czar are not present.

The remainder of the volume (folios 45-65) consists of further documents concerning Robert Erskine, mainly dealing with the settlement of his affairs after his death, including the completion of the purchase of Dr Archibald Pitcairne's library for Robert's successor as court physician.

Also included is a cutting from the 'Scotsman', 31 August 1895, of a letter by Robert Paul, on the subject of Robert Erskine (folio 66).
