Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows: (i) Copies by Stephen Hislop of his letters to the conveners (Robert Gordon, James Buchanan, William K Tweedie) of the Foreign Mission Committee of the Free Church of Scotland, with some other letters on financial matters, 1845-1852, 1857, undated (folio 1); (ii) Copies in a later hand of Hislop's letters, 1846, 1850-1851, 1862, undated, to his colleague Robert Hunter (folio 84); (iii) Notes, 1844-1845, 1851-1852, by Hislop on expenses (folio 131); (iv) Various addresses and papers by Hislop (not all in his hand), 1840-1858, undated, on abstinence (folio 149), Baka Bai, Rani of Nagpur (folio 151), his missionary work (folio 154), and the geology of Nagpur (folios 164, 174); (v) Reports, 1858-1860, undated, of Indian missionary workers (folio 190); (vi) Further addresses and papers, undated, by Hislop (again not all in his hand) on the Gonds (folio 199), Hindu feasts (folio 210), and missionary experiences (folio 249); (vii) Abstract by Hislop of Henry Duncan, ‘Sacred philosophy of the seasons’, volume i (Edinburgh, 1837) (folio 264); (viii) "Notes on Logic: being the substance of Professor [Robert] Buchanan's Lectures [at Glasgow], as reported by J Lang" (folio 271); (ix) Notes of sermons heard by Hislop in Edinburgh in 1859-1860, chiefly by the Rev J H Wilson at Fountainbridge Free Church (folio 308).
