Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows:

(i) Calendar in French in gold, red and blue; entries in gold include Saints Eloi (25 June), Martial (3 July) and Romain (23 October) (folio 1);

(ii) Sequences of the Gospels (folio 13);

(iii) 'Obsecro te' and 'O intemerata' (folio 18);

(iv) Hours of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The office of Nones is incorrectly described as Vespers (folio 25);

(v) Penitential Psalms and Litany (folio 72);

(vi) Hours of the Cross (folio 89);

(vii) Hours of the Holy Ghost (folio 92);

(viii) Office of the Dead (folio 95);

(ix) 'Les xv ioyes nostre dame' and 'Les vii requestes nostre seignieur' (folio 123);

(x) Hymn to the Cross in French (folio 131).

There are also reflections on death in French, written in an early sixteenth-century hand (folios 131 verso-133).

There are partial borders of scrolls, foliage, and flowers on a gold ground, and illuminated initials throughout. The calendar has small miniatures of the occupations of the months and the signs of the zodiac. The other miniatures are mostly in full floral borders: the four Evangelists (folio 13); the Annunciation, in an architectural framework of two columns supporting a pediment with putti (folio 25); the Visitation (folio 35); the Nativity (folio 47); the Annunciation to the Shepherds (folio 52); the Adoration of the Kings (folio 55); the Purification (folio 58); the Flight into Egypt (folio 61); the Coronation of the Virgin (folio 67); David in prayer (folio 72); the Crucifixion (folio 89); Pentecost (folio 92); Burial of the Dead (folio 95); the Virgin and Child enthroned, with the figure of a woman in prayer (folio 123).

Custodial History

On folio 133 is the name Marion[?] in an early sixteenth-century hand. The manuscript also has the ex libris of C C de Bourlamaque (folios 1 verso, 13 verso, 131 verso).
