Copy in the possession of the Reverend James Scott, dated Perth, March 29th 1784, of the ‘History of the united Parishes of Monivaird and Strowan’ compiled, circa 1774, by James Porteous of Dalvich, Minister of Monzievaird and Strowan., Circa 1774.

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This is part ii of Scott`s transcripts and translations.

Dates

  • Creation: Circa 1774.

Extent

0.00 Linear metres (37 + many blank folios.)

Language of Materials

From the Series: English

Arrangement

The text contains many small gaps (mostly of single words and phrases) because, according to a note at folio i, the original ‘is wrote in so unintelligible a manner that it was found impracticable to transcribe the whole and has rendered the following copy imperfect and incomplete’. Supplementary marginal notes have been added and some of the gaps have been filled in what appears to be another hand of the same period.

From a comparison with MS.8889(ii), a more confused and imperfect copy, it would appear that there is some disorder and possibly a lacuna in the text at folios 15-16. A leaf has been lost between folios 16 and 17.

Custodial History

According to ‘Transactions of the Literary and Antiquarian Society of Perth’, volume i, page 10 of introduction and the second footnote (which seems to indicate another manuscript), this copy appears to have been presented to the Society `by Mr Gillies, Bookseller in Perth` in 1785, shortly after its foundation; but it appears to have been amongst the papers of the Reverend James Scott (the principal founder of the Society) at his death, and sold along with them. It was bought by the Advocates’ Library at the sale of Scott’s manuscripts, Perth, 6 June 1818, lot 8.

Related Materials

MS.8889: Learned papers.
