Prayers and devotional exercises., 16th century.

 Item
Identifier: MS.7139

Scope and Contents

The text is written in a number of sixteenth-century hands on leaves of paper of various sizes, some of which (folios 98-146 in part, 216-251, and 269-271) have suffered losses to the text when the volume was trimmed.

The contents include 'Een regel der zielen leydende toter alder hoechster perfectien der doechden' (folio 1 verso), 'Een schoen exempel van eenen moninck' (folio 93 verso), 'Een suete herdencke op die pasien' (folio 103 verso), prayers to the Virgin and Child probably intended for use by nuns (folio 151), a translation of a work by Thomas Aquinas (folio 191), and instructions on meditation (folio 258).

The date 1567 appears at folio 174 and it seems likely that the rest of the volume was written at about the same time.

Lacking leaves before folio i and after folios 146, 249, 251, 264, and 271; folios 147-150, 185-190, 213-215, 221-223 (except for some nineteenth-century signatures at folio 222), and 272-274 are blank. Folios 1-7 appear to have been replaced after having been lost and a few other leaves may still be missing. Apart from folio 174 which has a crudely drawn picture of the infant Christ in a manger, there are no illustrations, and the only decorations are coloured geometric borders at folios 151 and 216.

Rubrics and large plain initials in red and sometimes in green and blue, and frequent underlinings in red.
