Correspondence and papers of William Summers Sutherland, relating to Bhutan., 1914-1919.
Scope and Contents
Letters of William Summers Sutherland to his wife, Annabella, and daughter, Marion, during two visits to Bhutan, along with a file of notes relating to both trips.
Sutherland`s first visit to Bhutan was in 1917, during which Sutherland was involved in the baptism of a Lepcha man. The second took place in 1919, when Sutherland accompanied Rev Dr John Anderson Graham, founder of the Kalimpong Homes. The letters describe the journey in detail, and offer insight into relations between European Christian missionaries and the Lamas in the country they were visiting.
