Scope and Contents

The volume is entitled ‘Staite bussines for the yeirs 1607 and 1608. Reg. Ja: 6’,and is marked ‘A.2.39’ and ‘Denmilne 19’

The contents are as follows.

(i) Holograph letter of Sir Thomas Hamilton to James VI on the subject of the ‘goldin’ charter granted by James II to the Bishop of St. Andrews; of grants of ‘secundas decimas’, of the victuals and provision of the King’s house, and the tenth penny of the royal casualties in certain shires said to have been made in former times to certain Bishops, and lastly, of an exemption from all taxation claimed by the Lord Torphichen for his lands and vassals. (ii) Holograph letter of Lord Balmerino to James VI narrating the proceedings of the Privy Council of Scotland in various matters including: the feud between the Earls of Eglinton and Glencairn; the feud between the Earl of Wigtown and Master of Montrose on the one part and the Lord of Blantyre and the Earl of Minto on the other. The plague is also alluded to in the letter, and great praise is bestowed on the Earl of Dunbar. Dated Holyroodhouse, 21 January 1607. (iii) Letter of the Earl of Dunfermline narrating the proceedings of the Privy Council of Scotland and describing the present state of the country, Mention is made of a subsidy formerly granted and now about to be collected. (iv) Letter of Lord Balmerino to James VI concerning the delay made at the English Chancery in affixing the Great Seal to a grant in favour of Balmerino of the ‘reversion of Sir John Roper’s office’. Dated Holyroodhouse, 1 January 1607.

(v) Letter of the Privy Council of Scotland to James VI complaining against the seizure by the Lord Treasurer of England of two ‘tuns of Canarie wyne’ imported by William, son to Thomas Geddes, Merchant of Edinburgh, for sale in London, on the ground that William was no citizen of London. Dated Edinburgh, 27 January 1607.

(vi) Letter of the Earl of Montrose to James VI concerning the erection of Arbroath into a Lordship in favour of the Marquis of Hamilton; the erections of a similar nature in favour of Sir Peter Young and the Laird of Panmure; the feud between the Earls of Eglinton and Glencairn; and praises of the Earl of Dunbar. Dated Edinburgh, 19 January 1607.

(vii) Letter of Sir Thomas Hamilton to James VI narrating the proceedings against Lord Maxwell and Sir James McConnell for their late breaking of ward. The concluding paragraph of the letter makes mention of the ‘Mynes’. Dated Edinburgh, 28 January 1608. . (viii) Holograph letter of the Earl of Argyle to James VI, mentioning that the 24th of June had been appointed for the marriage of his daughter and the Marquis of Huntly’s son ‘according to your Majesties command’ and requesting that the bridegroom might have permission to come to Scotland for this purpose. (x) Letter of the Earl of Dunfermline, Provost and three of the Baillies of Edinburgh to James VI recommending Thomas Fisher and William Speir, merchants, be appointed (by direction of the Privy Council of Scotland) by the Town Council to discuss ‘the same maters of the unioun’. Likewise asking payment of the King’s debts to the Town out of the ‘forend’ of the present taxation, and concluding with a statement and petition concerning Patrick Galloway and Gilbert Primrose, nominated Ministers of Edinburgh. (xii) Letter of the Privy Council of Scotland to James VI recommending that money should be granted for printing a work on the ancient laws of the country prepared by the Clerk Register ‘ane wyse learned and worthie clerk’ [i.e. Sir John Skene’s ‘Regiam Majestatem’]. This letter is signed, amongst other, by the Earl of Dunfermline and is written in his hand and in his usual bombastic style. Dated Edinburgh, 15 March 1607.

(xv) Letter of the Privy Council of Scotland to James VI thanking him for his defence of his ancient Kingdom against some reproachful speeches made in the ‘Lower House’ in connection with the project for a Union. (xxi) Letter of the Privy Council of Scotland to James VI concerning some insult lately offered by the Earl of Mar to the Queen who was at this time at Stirling. Dated Stirling Castle, 24 May [1603].

(xxii) Letter of the Privy Council of Scotland to James VI concerning the offers made by the Marquis of Huntly in relation to the ‘North Ilis’. The letter also concerns some intended examinations of the Marquis on the subject of his religion (he being suspected of Catholicism); and finally, the ‘disorderlie misbehaviour of the Synod of Perth’. (xxiii) Letter of the Earl of Abercorn to James VI, thanking him for his new title, and mentions the Marquis of Hamilton’s intention of going to foreign parts. Dated Paisley, 12 May 1607.

(xxiv) Copy of a letter of the Privy Council of Scotland to James VI concerning a submission between the Laird of Mellerstain and his mother, and James Home of Galis [or Galia]. Dated 25 May 1607.

(xxv) Letter, [?1604], of the Earl of Montrose to James VI, thanking the King for his appointment as High Commissioner.

(xxvi) Holograph letter of Sir Thomas Hamilton to James VI thanking him for the favours bestowed upon his father and himself. Dated Edinburgh, 29 May 1607. (xxvii) Letter of Lord Ochiltree to James VI concerning his family concerns and clearing himself from any imputations of having advised or approved of his cousin’s entering into a submission with his father’s murderers. Dated Edinburgh, 8 June 1606.

(xxviii) Letter of the Privy Council of Scotland to James VI concerning an English suit affecting some of the debateable lands granted to Sir George Ramsay and Thomas Lumsden and claiming that the said matter should be tried by joint commissioners from both nations. (xxix) Letter of the Privy Council of Scotland to James VI excusing themselves for not liberating the Earl of Atholl from ward in Edinburgh according to a late warrant from the King, whom however they have now ordered to be set at liberty. In the letter they also vindicated themselves from having shown any favour to the Master of Crawford; and finally the letters details some of their proceedings with Master Robert Bruce in the ‘mater of Gowry’. (xxx) Letter of the Privy Council of Scotland to James VI concerning their dealings with the Marquis of Huntly, Earl of Argyle, and others, in the affairs of the Isles. The letter also concerns a dispute between the Comptroller and farmers of the Customs about an allowance claimed by the farmers for the customs on the traffic between the two countries from November 1605 to November 1606, amounting to £14,000.
