Scope and Contents
Letters, 1826-1839, of Philip Stanhope to John Murray II and John Murray III, with related papers. They concern works of his published by the Murrays, including “The life of Belisarius”, “History of the war of the succession in Spain”, the first volumes of “History of England from the peace of Utrecht to the peace of Aix-la-Chapelle”, and “Spain under Charles the Second”, a selection from the correspondence of Alexander Stanhope. There is also discussion of parliamentary matters, and of his reading, with comments on manuscripts sent to him for criticism. The letters are signed “Mahon”, his title until March 1855. The letters are arranged in chronological order.
