Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) ‘Information’ relating to a dispute between Lachlan Mackintosh of Mackintosh and Coll Macdonell of Keppoch over the feus of Glenroy, 1695. (Folio 1.)

(ii) Letter of William, 3rd Earl of Kilmarnock, about a tenant, 1706. (Folio 2.)

(iii) ‘The characters’, a poem printed as ‘A Jacobite Pasquil’ in ‘The Scottish Antiquary’, volume xii (1898), page 56, a cutting from which is attached. (Folio 4.)

(iv) Letters of William Drummond, Edinburgh, to Sir Alexander Don of Newtoun, Baronet, about legal business and public affairs, Edinburgh, 1714, 1716; one is an appeal for charity for Jacobite prisoners signed by David Drummond and W Drummond. (Folio 8.)

(v) Letter of Duncan Forbes of Culloden to his brother John Forbes, Member of Parliament, about Glengarry and other rebels, Edinburgh, 26 April 1716. (Folio 18.)

(vi) Schedule entitled ‘List of Forces in England, 1745’. (Folio 20.)

(viii) Letter, unsigned, of Professor Colin MacLaurin giving the news about the battle of Falkirk as it reached him, Edinburgh, 17 January 1745-1746. (Folio 23.)

(ix) Holograph copy, with insertions and corrections, of a letter of Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun, Lord Milton, to Sir John Cope, about transport for his troops, Edinburgh, 5 September 1745. According to a pencilled note it was given by Lord Milton to John Home, author of the ‘History of the Rebellion of 1745’, 1802, where (page 321) it is inaccurately printed. (Folio 24.)

(x) Letter of Field-Marshal George Wade to the Earl of Home, commending his zeal and activity, Newcastle, 8 November 1745. (Folio 26.)

(xi) Poem, early 20th century, of seven four-lined stanzas (with four-line refrain beginning ‘But we ran and they ran’) on the battle of Falkirk, beginning, ‘It was in the Mirk near ye Toun of Falkirk a battle there was which I saw man’. (Folio 28.)

(xii) Letter signed Depréville, on behalf of Madame Depréville and Madame de Candras, apparently to an important personage, regarding Madame de Candras’s financial difficulties, Paris, 1746. There is a note dated Aberdeen, 1746, in another hand written at the top of the letter addressed ‘Au Marquis de Tullebarden’ asking him to order ‘Mons. de Waters’ to remit the money. It appears from the postscript (perhaps a second letter) that ‘le Chevalier Stuart’ was to remit the letter to Mr Waters. Both the letter and note are in French. (Folio 29.)

(xiii) ‘Account of arms delivered out of Edinburgh Castle to the undermentioned persons as likewise what returned and what is still standing out’, 1746. (Folio 32.)

(xiv) Four letters of Chief Baron Sir Thomas Parker, of the Commission of Oyer and Terminer at Carlisle, and one of John Sharpe, Solicitor to the Treasury, to Sir John Strange, leading counsel for the Crown in the trials of the Jacobites, York, Carlisle, and Doncaster, 1746. Includes the oath administered to Scots witnesses; an example of the kind of caption to be served on the prisoners; document titled ‘alarmed with the sample of the Scotch witnesses’; and documents showing the number of convictions, etc., at Carlisle, and convictions, etc., at York, with modern transcripts. (Folio 34.)

(xv) Letter of Montgomery, Excise Officer, Dundee, desiring a transfer southwards, 1746-1747. (Folio 52.)

(xvi) Letter signed by Simon, Lord Lovat, to his son ‘the Honourable Simon, Master of Lovat’, advising him how to conduct himself “thro’ this evil world,” Tower of London, 22 March 1746-1747. (Folio 53.)

(xvii) Two contemporary poems, one, ‘To Mr Secretary Murraye on his turning evidence’, beginning “To all that Virtue’s holy ties can boast, To truth to Honour and to Manhood lost”, with a printed copy, 1747; the other, ‘The Tears of Scotland’, beginning, ‘Mourn, Hapless Caledonia, mourn’. (Folio 55.)

(xviii) Letters written by James Drummond, or James More Macgregor, eldest son of Rob Roy, to John Campbell of Barcaldine, asking for money to pay for his legal defence, Edinburgh Castle, 1752, while awaiting his trial for his share in carrying off the heiress, Jean Kay. See note in a modern hand on folio 59. (Folio 60.)

(xix) Letter of George, 3rd Earl of Cromartie, acknowledging receipt of the Countess’s pension, 1755. (folio 64.)

(xx) Letter of Charles Steuart to John Home, enclosing a memorandum on the origin and cause of the Rebellion in 1745, dated Glencoe, 1781. (Folio 66.)

(xxi) ‘A brief scheme of the treasonable practices against the present government by gentlemen ... in most ... shires and counties in England’, etc., undated. (Folio 68.)

(xxii) Information regarding Colonel Walter Browen and his forfeited estate of Knockany, county Limerick, early 18th century. (Folio 70.)

(xxiii) Information regarding Lord Gore (sic) undated. (Folio 71.)

(xxiv) Signature ascribed to Thomas Hay, 7th Earl of Kinnoull. (Folio 73.)

(xxviii) ‘The English Choyce or the glory of the Whiggs’, five four-lined stanzas beginning, ‘The glorys of this world to Whiggs are given’. (Folio 99.)

(xxix) ‘Upon the picture of the chevalier de St. James.’ Sixteen lines of verse beginning, ‘What Brittain can survey that heavenly face’. (Folio 100.)

(xxx) Report to the House of Commons on the Forfeited Estates in Scotland, 1722, with a letter on the same subject, 1747. (Folio 101.)

(xxxi) ‘Accompt of all the Forfeited Estates in Scotland’, giving statistics of rental and value of personal estates, 1751. (Folio 108.)

(xxxii) Letter of John Campbell, 4th Earl of Breadalbane, relating to a phenomenon in Loch Tay, 1784. (Folio 110.)

(xxxiii) Letter of John Bruce to John Gough Nichols, on the conduct of the Duke of Perth in the ’45, and the claim to the earldom of Perth, 1846.
