Manuscripts of proposals of Robert Mein for the removal of night-soil, etc., from lands, i.e. tall tenement buildings, as published in his ‘City cleaned and country improven’., 1735-1737, 1751.

Scope and Contents

Two manuscripts, differing somewhat from each other and from the printed work. At the end of each are the undertakings signed by subscribers to the scheme.

(i) 'Proposals For Keeping the Streets Lains and Passages of the City of Edinburgh Neat and Clean By a Voluntary Subscription of the Proprietors and Possessors of the sundry Houses therein.' The proposals only, followed by the signed undertakings of 'the Possessors and Proprietors of the Four Ston Lands Within the Parliament closs the four Ston lands next towards ye Cross the Ston land wtin Borthwicks Closs head, And the land calld Mrs Andersons land In the Back of the Fishmarket', 1734-1735. ‘Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland’, volume iv, page 442. (ii) "Edinburgh Clean'd and The Country Improven, or, Proposals For Puting an Effectuall Stop to that Pernitious Practise of throuing over the Windows all Sorts of filth, Foul water, ashes, &c. And for Keeping the Streets, Winds, Closses, &c. of the City Neat and Clean By a Voluntary Subscription of the Possessors and Proprietors therein", 1735. The proposals, preceded by the introduction, mainly as in the printed work, and followed by the signed undertakings of persons living on both sides of the Lawnmarket, High Street, and Canongate, 1735-1737. On folio 36 verso are notes, approving of the scheme, signed by the architect William Adam and Professor Colin MacLaurin.
