Scope and Contents

The volume also contains material accumulated by John Gibson Lockhart.

The papers include :

Copies of four letters of Sir Walter Scott, 1824, 1829 (folios 15-22);

Information regarding Jonathan Swift supplied by Irish correspondents (folios 33, 70);

Maria Edgeworth’s note of the tour which she took with Scott in August 1825 (folio 50);

Thomas Moore’s journal, in his hand, of his visit to Abbotsford in 1825, used by Lockhart in his ‘Life of Sir Walter Scott’, chapter lxiv (folio 60);

Copy of John Ballantyne’s autobiographical notes, 1829, partly used by Lockhart in the ‘Life of Sir Walter Scott’, chapter lii (folio 75);

Letter ‘From the Nobleman, when at Court, to his Lady’, in the hand of Lady Louisa Stuart. This is evidently one of her contributions to the ‘Private Letters of the Seventeenth Century’ (see MS.859, folio 167); it is not included in the volume printed in 1821, and is written on paper watermarked 1829 (folio 88);

Memoranda by Robert Chambers on Tam o’ the Cowgate and Scottish beggars of the old school (folios 90, 272);

Reviews written for the ‘Quarterly Review’ and possibly other magazines by Brougham and others, [?1836, ?1838, 1845, 1849-1850, undated] (folios 133-233);

Introductions to the ‘Chronicles of the Canongate’, part ii (Fair Maid of Perth), “Laird’s Jock”, and 'Tapestried Chamber', perhaps intended for the 'Opus Magnum' but not printed in it (watermark 1829) (folios 264-271);

Excerpt from a manuscript on Scott in Lockhart’s hand (folio 288).
