Developmental notes of Ian Rankin for his novel ‘The Impossible Dead’., 2010-2011.
Scope and Contents
Notes, 2010-2011, of Ian Rankin relating to the development of the plot and characters for ‘The Impossible Dead’. Folios 1-85.
The notes include working and research notes, including research on Willie McRae, the 1980s, and terrorism. Most of the notes are undated. Some of the notes include references to specific drafts, including first, second, and third drafts. Otherwise, the distinction between the notes and drafts is often unclear. Some notes have been revisited and subsequently annotated by Rankin as his development of the novel progressed. As far as possible, evidence of development and changes in theme and plot have been used to inform the arrangement.
Editorial notes, 2010-2011, of Ian Rankin relating to revised drafts of ‘The Impossible Dead’. Folios 86-137.
The notes relate to plot and character revisions, and additional plot development, for revised drafts. Most of the notes are undated and, as such, the arrangement has been suggested by a comparison of changes in plot and theme.
Also includes editorial notes of copy editor (Folio 124) and Caroline Oakley (editor, Orion Publishing Group) (Folios 125-135).
