Scope and Contents

Catherine Gordon Byron (1765-1811) was the mother of the poet, Lord Byron. She and Byron lived in Aberdeen after the abandonment and death of his father, John Byron. They moved to Nottinghamshire after Byron inherited his title and estates from his uncle in 1798. Catherine Byron worried about her son and their relationship became strained as he grew older and more extravagant. The letters of Byron to his mother cover a decade of his youth, whilst her letters to her son and other correspondents cover the last 23 years of her life.

Anne Isabella Noel (1792-1860) married Lord Byron in 1815. Their relationship was argumentative from the start of the marriage and ended in a well-publicised separation. Rumours relating to the behaviour of Byron circulated and culminated in Byron leaving Britain in a self-imposed exile on the continent. There are ten letters of Lady Byron to her husband (all of which date from before their marriage) as well as many letters to a variety of recipients. The letters here of Lady Byron span over 45 years.
