Scope and Contents

The letters and manuscripts in this folder mostly relate to a proposed publication by Newton Hanson about Lord Byron. The letters at the start of the sequence were possibly collated in order for them to be included in the work. Included in the proposed works were many copies of letters, mainly sent to John Hanson, father to Newton and an executor for Lord Byron. There are two copies of the main text of the work – the first is more complete than the second.

Letter of Thomas Jones to John Hanson, 1805: folios 1-2;

Letter of John Hanson to John Murray [II], 1818: folio 3;

Copy of a letter, dated 1803, of Joseph Drury to John Hanson, undated: folios 4-5;

Notes showing a chronology of the events of the life of Lord Byron from 1788 to 1811, undated: folios 6-7.

Manuscript recollection of attending a speech day at Harrow School in the company of Lord Byron by an unnamed author, possibly one of the sons of Joseph Drury, undated: folios 8-9;

Manuscript of Newton Hanson for a work about Lord Byron, including an outline (folios 10-11), dedication (folio 12), frontispiece (folio 13), title page (folio 14), introduction (folios15-21) and the main text. The main text includes a large number of copies of letters mainly to John Hanson, dated between 1801 and 1807 (folios 76-160). Correspondents include John Birch, Catherine Gordon Byron, George Gordon Byron (6th Baron Byron), Joseph Drury, John Johnson, Thomas Jones, Augusta Leigh and possibly George Augustus Henry Anne Parkyns, (2nd Baron Rancliffe), ?1847: folios 10-160;

Second incomplete copy of the manuscript, with only certain pages of the main text copied, undated: folios 161-191.
