Scope and Contents

The manuscripts here have been largely arranged in chronological order. The original foliation of the volume has been retained, although some of the folios have been removed prior to arrival at the Library.

For poetical works, first lines are given in brackets after the title of the poem. The manuscripts are in the hand of Byron unless otherwise stated.

‘Lord Byron: Complete poetical works’, edited by Jermone McGann, has been used in some of the following descriptions – where his titles differ from those on the physical manuscripts these have been given in square brackets.

Manuscript of ‘Alterations in the poem ‘Childish Recollections’’ containing alternatives to lines 89-92, 111 and 115-120 (“If once my muse a harsher portrait drew…”) with additions and deletions, 1808: folio 1;

Fair copy of ‘Lines Inscribed upon a cup Formed from a Skull’ (“Start not! Nor deem my spirit fled…”) largely in the hand of Augusta Leigh, with title and date ‘Newstead Abbey, 1808’, in the hand of Byron although actually transcribed by Leigh after 14 August 1811: folios 2-3;

Proof of dedicatory verses entitled ‘To the Lady Charlotte Harley’, undated [1814]: folios 6-9;

Title page reading ‘Weep Daughter, a Turkish song’, undated [?1812], with a related letter of Byron to John Murray [II], 22 Sept 1812: folios 21-23;

[There is no folio 24, probably because of the removed manuscript detailed below]

Blank except for a pencil note reading ‘“From a Turkish song and stanzas “Weep daughter of a royal line…” taken for V and A, Oct 73” suggesting that the missing folio 24 was removed for exhibition and on return placed in a different volume (located at Ms.43348 f.13): folio 25;

Fair copy of ‘Translation from the Portuguese’ [entitled ‘Translation from the Portuguese in McGann] (“In moments to delight devoted…”), undated [?1812]: folio 26;

Corrected fair copy of a poem entitled ‘Farewell’ [entitled ‘Farewell! If Ever Fondest Prayer’ in McGann’] (“Farewell! – if ever fondest prayer…”), undated [1813]: folio 36 verso;

Notes from various years relating to the whereabouts of manuscripts and proofs of ‘Fare thee Well’ and ‘Sketch from Private Life’, - these probably explain the removal of the folios 40-59, 1930-1973 and undated: folio 39;

[Folios 40-59 have been removed from this volume and appear to have been bound separately (see notes on f.39)]
