Scope and Contents

A group of about 2500 plans, chiefly made by Messrs Stevenson. Their business was concerned chiefly with sea-works, lighthouses, harbours, canals and river courses, and the plans reflect this interest, although there are some items relating to railways and bridges.

Arrangement

The plans have been arranged in two main sections: plans relating to Scotland (MSS.5844-5864), and plans relating to England and overseas (MSS.5865-5883); MSS.5884-5887 relate to lighthouses, and MS.5888 consists of drawings of apparatus; a few additional items have been listed individually (MSS.5889-5896). Within the two main sections the plans have been arranged alphabetically by place-name.

A detailed inventory of the plans, showing the location, subject, date, and, where known, the surveyor of each item has been compiled (MS.5843).

Presented, 1958, by D Alan Stevenson, Edinburgh.

Separated Materials

Plans prepared by the firm for the Northern Lighthouse Board were transferred to the Board in 1922; similarly plans made for the Clyde Lighthouse Trust were given to that body in 1952. Others remain the property of the Stevenson family.
