Scope and Contents

`Aeneid` i.1-45 are lost. There are verse arguments to `Aeneid` ii-xii (Pseudo-Ovid in ‘Anthologia Latina’, 1).

Subscription to the `Eclogues`, folio 17 verso: `Explicit liber Bucolicorum Antonii filii S. Leonardi de bagnara Scriptus p(er) me Antoniu(m) Caballa(r)iu(m) 1467 die 28 Augusti`.

Initials in red and purple or blue and purple to each `Eclogue`, to the arguments of `Aeneid` ii, iv-xii, and to `Aeneid` ii, v-xii. Initials infilled with a flower or with leaves, in red, green, blue, and gold, to the argument of `Aeneid` iii and to `Aeneid` iii-iv.

Interlinear glosses and occasional marginal notes of various dates.

Collation: 1¹⁰, 2⁸ (-2⁸), 3⁸ +1 vellum leaf after 3⁸, 4-21¹⁰, 22⁸. Catchwords in the centre lower margin parallel to the text in gatherings 1 and 4-21, in the right-hand lower margin at right angles to the text in 3. Pricking not preserved. Ruling in ink. 1 column. 25 lines in gatherings 1-2 and 8-22, 26 in 3-7. Ruled area 190-195 x 80-87 millmetres. Secundo folio: `nee mala inani`.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Paper (watermark: scales, Briquet 2491, North Italy, last third of 15th century). Scottish binding of brown calf, late 17th century, stamped in gilt with, in an oval, a crowned winged heart, above a large crown, below a monogram (?DC), at each side feathers(?).

Custodial History

The manuscript belonged to George Douglas, son of the 1st Duke of Queensberry, whose library was presented to the Advocates` Library after his death in 1695.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
