 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.18.8.20

Scope and Contents

The contents of the manuscript are as follows:

(i) The liturgies of St John Chrysostom (folio 1), St Basil the Great (folio 19), and the Presanctified (folio 41). Substantial differences from modern texts (Εὐχολόγιον τὸ μέγα (Venice, 1862), pages 47-97, 108-118, was used) are: in Saints John and Basil the ό̔τι πρέπει, the ό̔τι σὸν τὸ ϰράτος, and the ό̔τι ἀγαθός are placed after, not before, the prayers of the first, second, and third antiphons respectively, in St John before the εἰρηνιϰά, in St Basil after the εἰρηνιϰά (the latter arrangement is followed in the texts printed in Εὐχολόγιον ‘sive Rituale Graecorum’, pages 65-66, 159-160, and in other manuscripts, for example British Museum Harl.MS.5561 and Addit.MS.40755); the εὐχὴ τῆς ἐϰτενοῦς ἱϰεσίας is placed after, not before the εἰρηνιϰά; there are omissions in several εἰρηνιϰά; and the rubrics differ considerably, verbally and in length.

Folio 52 blank.

(ii) Offices for the ordination of reader, sub-deacon, bishop, presbyter, and deacon; cf. Εὐχολόγιον ‘sive Rituale Graecorum’, pages 233, 244, 302, 295, 252 (folio 53).

(iii) The Nicene Creed, description of a Greek church, notes on baptism and purgatory, rubrics for services on the occasions of betrothal, birth, and death, and interpretation of the Number of the Beast of the Apocalypse (Λατεῖνος) ; written for a non-Orthodox audience. This is in a different, possibly rather later, hand (folio 63).

In the prayer of the δίπτυχα in the liturgy of St John (folio 13) memorial is made Νεωτερίου, Φωτεινῆς, ϰαὶ ʼΙωέσαφ τῶν μονάχων, and in the lower margin a later hand has added μνήσθητι ϰ(ύρι)ε, τὴν ψυχὴν τῆς δούλης σου δ…ήνης ϰ(αὶ) ἀνάπαυ αὐτὴν έ̓νθα οἱ δίϰεοι ἀναπαύσονται. In the corresponding prayer in the liturgy of St Basil (folio 33) memorial is made Διονυσίου ἱερομονάχου, Γρηγορίου α( ) ʽΡόδος ϰαὶ Δημητρίου. Writing on folio 71 appears to be theological.
