Scope and Contents

The ‘History’ was first published in one volume in 1838; the 1843 edition was considerably enlarged in two volumes. Only a small number of the corrections on these proofs appear in the 2nd edition; the remainder, with the additions and insertions, were probably intended for a 3rd edition.

The volumes were presented to the Advocates’ Library in 1908 by Andrew Mitchell, Sheriff-Substitute of Stirling.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
