Papers, consisting of historical and genealogical notes and extracts, transcripts of formal and legal documents of earlier periods (as well as a number of original documents and papers), and a few unrelated letters.

 File
Identifier: Adv.MS.22.2.9

Scope and Contents

The papers, written in many different 18th-century hands, are very mixed and are quite brief. The largest groups are:

(i) part (pages 17-32) of a collection of transcripts, in the hand of one of Walter Macfarlane`s assistants, of documents relating to members of the family of Stirling of Keir (folios 23-30);

(ii) part of a collection of transcripts, in the hand of another of Macfarlane`s assistants, of royal and other letters to members of the family of Mure of Rowallan (folios 47-60). These are numbered from 1 to 47, the text breaking off partway through number 47: for the originals of many of these, and of a few others not amongst these transcripts, see Adv.MS.54.1.7. Two of these (number 39 at folio 58 verso and number 41 at folio 59 verso) are printed in ‘The historie and descent of the house of Rowallane’, pages 132-133, from copies in the possession of Thomas Thomson, advocate.

(iii) Blazons of arms of the ancient Scottish nobility drawn by Sir James Balfour of Denmilne, Lord Lyon King of Arms (folios 77-94).

Custodial History

It is not known who originally owned all these papers, nor whether they were part of a collection; but the text of folio 20 is printed (not very accurately), apparently from this copy, in ‘History of Dumfries’, as Appendix F, page 897, as `from General Hutton`s MSS., in the Advocates` Library`. Their later history also is obscure: folio 95 is inscribed `David Constable`, and marginalia dated 1841 at folios 26-9 may be in the hand of Cosmo Innes. The circumstances of their arrival in the Advocates` Library are unrecorded but according to a note by William B D D Turnbull who copied six of the transcripts at folios 23-30 (MS.2101, folios 176-183), they were arranged by James Dennistoun in 1841, and folio 40 is printed in ‘Liber Conventus Sancte Katherine Senensis prope Edinburgum’, page 84.
