Notes on various Greek and Latin authors and on Greek language by James Moor, Professor of Greek at Glasgow University, and others.

 File
Identifier: Adv.MS.23.6.18

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the material consists of elementary exegesis, apparently notes for Moor`s lectures. The dates 1746 and 1751-1753 occur in various places.

The principal works dealt with are:

‘Philippics’, ‘On the Peace’, ‘Olynthiacs’, ‘On Halonnesus’, and ‘On the Affairs in the Chersonese’ by Demosthenes (folios 1-50);

‘Hiero’ by Xenophon (folios 57-69);

‘How a young man should listen to poetry’ by Plutarch (folios 71-80);

‘Agamemnon’ by Aeschylus, verses 1-234 (folios 82-91);

‘On the Sublime’ by `Longinus`, chapters 39-53 (folios 100-115);

Marcus Aurelius (folios 116-22);

‘Aeneid’ by Virgil, vii and viii (folios 157-63); and,

‘Tusculans’ by Cicero, i, ii, and iv (folios 165-175, 180-185; the notes on i and ii are copies by an unknown pupil from Moor`s autographs).

There are also notes by Moor on Greek syntax (folios 51-56), ‘Orestes’ and ‘Bacchae’ by Euripides (folios 92-95), `Cebes` and Lucian (folios 98-99), the ‘Odyssey’ (folios 123-125), and various Latin authors (folios 178-179); a note of an error in the Foulis Homer, which

Moor firmly believes `is one of the mad impudences of Ja. Tweedie [the press-reader, see MSS.3290-3293]; whom I have caught in many pranks of this kind’ (folio 126); lists of suppositions verses in Homer, of Greek epic fragments, and of misprints in H Stephanus’s edition of the Odyssey and Homeric Hymns (folios 127-128, 186-189); and notes on Sappho`s Φαίνεταί μοι κῆνος, with a collation of the

Paris manuscript supplied to Moor by Jean Augustin Capperronier, readings of other manuscripts and editions, and emendations (folios 129-135).

There are finally a letter, 1757, of Sir David Dalrymple, with notes on the Greek lyric poets (folios 137-141), and notes by Charles Wilson (possibly the later Professor of Church History at St Andrews) on the Ionic, Doric, Attic, and epic dialects (folios 142-155).
