Material on the early history of Scotland by Sir Robert Sibbald.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.33.3.26

Scope and Contents

The contents of the manuscript are as follows:

(i) `Caledonia sive Scotia Antiqua et Recentior`, 1680 (folio 1). According to the preface, Sibbald intended this to be a work in four books, but it breaks off after the beginning of the second. The contents do not correspond with those of `Caledonia` described by Sibbald in ‘An Account of the writers antient and modern’, pages 9-11, which refers to Adv.MS.15.1.2, folios 3-14.

(ii) `Corn: Taciti Britannia`, 1687-1688 (folio 11). See ‘An Account of the writers antient and modern’, pages 11-14. The text breaks off at the beginning of book 3.

(iii) Material on Tacitus`s `Agricola` in Latin and English with extracts from several published commentaries (folio 61 verso). It includes (folio 66 verso) `The Introduction to the Scotish history`.

(iv) Description of the contents of the royal tombs at Holyroodhouse, 1683 (folio 1 inverted). This was published from another manuscript by ‘Official Guide to the palace of Holyroodhouse’, pages 51-52.

(v) `Notes of D.J. MS` on the ancient history of Scotland (folio 2 inverted).

(vi) Extracts from ‘The Life of Agricola’ (folio 3 verso inverted).
