Fifteenth-century manuscript of the 'short version' of the 'Polychronicon' of Ranulph Higden.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.33.4.12

Scope and Contents

This is a copy of the original, short version ending in 1327. It contains preface (folio iii), alphabetical table (folio v; the reference-system, explained at the beginning, is to the foliation of this manuscript), map of the world (folio xiii verso), and text in seven books (folios 1, 33, 57, 92, 122 verso, 159 verso, 183), not formally divided into chapters.

The presence of a map is unusual in this version (‘Universal Chronicle of Ranulf Higden’, pages 63-68, 97-98). It is described in ‘Mappemondes A.D. 1200-1500’, pages 157-158. A colour image of the map is published in ‘Graphische Gestalt und Signifikanz. Europa in den Weltkarten des Beatus von Liebana und des Ranulf Higden’.

The initials of the books are in blue and red with red tracery, those of sections in blue with red tracery, and others in blue or red or picked out in red, with blue and red paraphs. Some headings are in red (guides for these are present, in a small fine hand). Marginal notes are underlined or boxed in red. In the map the sea is coloured green.

Headings of book numbers and occasional notes are in a later hand.

On folio ii verso is a eulogy of an unnamed person, incipit `Vigentibus incommodis nemo benignior, resumpta sanctitate nemo rigidior`. On folio 222 are the numbers 1-16 in red, and a note on Chester. On folio 222 verso are a list of significant dates in the history of monasticism and a note on Eusebius. There is deleted writing on folio 221 verso. Numbers are inserted before the catchwords of gatherings 6, 7, 12, 14, and 15 (folios 60, 72, 132, 156, 167).
