The typescript covers chapters I-II (folios 1-7), X-XV (folios 23-45) and part of chapter XLVI to the end of the book (folios 55-119). The two former sections were mounted on large sheets of paper, and the last section has now been similarly treated to facilitate binding. The printed cuttings cover chapters III-IX (folios 7-22) and chapters XVI-XIX (folios 46-54). The printed text is taken from an earlier appearance of parts of the novel in the 'Sunday School' during 1894. The typescript pages represent a thorough revision and expansion of its original appearance in print, and the whole is apparently copy for the version published in the 'Cornhill Magazine', July 1895-March 1896, and in book form in 1896. Despite the profuse verbal alterations, there are many small variations between this text and the final magazine version; these changes were made at the page proof stage (see MS.9988).
