'Scotland... Vol. 2. Continuation of my diary on my tour into Scotland, in the summer of 1813', by Sir (Nathaniel) William Wraxall, 1st Baronet.
Scope and Contents
Sir (Nathaniel) William Wraxall travelled from Loch Lomond by Inveraray and neighbourhood, Dumbarton, Glasgow, Stirling, and Dunfermline to Kirkcaldy, 12-27 July; stayed with the Fergusons of Raith from 28 July to 4 September; and visited Linlithgow, Edinburgh, Leith, and Haddington, ending at Beil, 4-29 September. There are 'general observations on Scotland' on folios 28 verso-31 verso. The writer takes an interest in everything that he sees, and besides describing scenery and discussing antiquities at length, he makes lively and forcible observations on the manners of the people, women, dress, sanitation, the conditions of travel, agriculture, building, etc., drawing comparisons with England and Continental countries. He deals especially fully with Edinburgh. His general conclusion is that the people 'do not seem to be as civilized, cleanly, or comfortable, either in their persons, or in their habitations, as the face and aspect of the country would seem to warrant or indicate’ (folio 23 verso).
