Identifier: MS.21238

Scope and Contents

The seven penitential psalms begin on folio 2.

The Psalms and several of the prayers are written in Latin (Psalms 1 (51) and cxxix (130) are not written out in full), the rest of the prayers and all the rubrics are in Italian.

A scrap of paper inscribed 'Libriccino che fu di uso del Cardinal Duca d'Yorck' in a nineteenth-century hand is tipped in at the front of the volume (folio i).

Custodial History

The book contains the arms of Henry Benedict Stuart, Cardinal York, as Henry IX, for whom the book was written, doubtless by a member of his household: the hand does not appear to be his, in spite of the printed label pasted inside the front cover. Also pasted inside the front cover is a label gold-stamped 'ex libris Mortimer L. Schiff’, and remnants of what may have been an older, unidentified bookplate. Written inside the back cover are 'Io Francesco Lanvó 1813', possibly a member of York's household, and apparently in the hand of the book, '14 April 1815'(?).
