Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows: ‘Breviat of the genealogie of the honourable surname of the Lesleyes, Earls of Rothes, sinc ther first arrivall in Scotland to thir dayes, collected out of ancient evidences, manuscripts and histories of the tymes, togither with some of ther cadents’, 17th century, attributed to Sir James Balfour of Denmill, Lyon (Adv.MS.17.2.4);

Gordons of Craichlaw (Adv.MS.27.5.28);

Letters, 1618-1712, to members of the Oswald family of Fingaltoun. Some are addressed to Sir James Oswald in his capacity of General Receiver of Supply and Excise (Adv.MS.29.2.11, folios 62-113);

Heraldic collection, late 16th century-early 17th century, of Sir David Lindsay (Adv.MS.31.3.20);

Collection, late 16th century-1664, of English arms in trick, probably compiled as a working notebook by herald painters in London, one of whom appears to have worked with Sir Henry Saint George, Garter King of Arms. (Adv.MS.31.4.6);

Orkney genealogies and anecdotes ‘collected by Robert Nicolson who served as Sheriff Substitute of Orkney from 1793 to 1814 inclusive’, 1775-1839 (Adv.MS.34.2.18);

Biographical and genealogical notes, early 19th century, relating to Ordinary Lords of the Courts of Session, 1641-1706, compiled by John Philp Wood (Adv.MS.37.2.3).
