Score books and photographs of the Grange Cricket Club, Edinburgh.
Scope and Contents
Grange Cricket Club was formed in 1832, and takes its name from the Grange area of Edinburgh where the members first played. The club moved to its present Raeburn Place premises in 1872. Grange Cricket Club is notable as one of the oldest and most successful of Scottish cricket clubs, and also as the host of numerous international matches. In 1849, the club organised the first ‘Grand Match’ staged in Scotland when a Scotland Twenty-two faced an All England XI. Another England XI, including W G Grace, played at Raeburn Place against Eighteen Gentlemen of Edinburgh in 1877. Matches against major touring sides continue to be held at Raeburn Place.
Edinburgh Northern Hockey Club (founded in 1901) became tenants of Grange Cricket Club in 1928. The two clubs amalgamated in the 1960s as The Grange Club.
