Minute book of the Lanarkshire Tandem Club.

 Item
Identifier: Acc.14334

Scope and Contents

Minutes of the meetings of the Lanarkshire Tandem Club, which was formed on 1st April 1902.

The club met to drive horses in tandem formation. The volume includes a list of the founding six members: General T.R. Stevenson C.B., Joseph Monteith Esq., Michael Thomson Carmichael Esq., Elliot Scott Mackirdy Esq., C.J. Edmondstoun Cranstoun Esq., with Sir Windham Robert Carmichael-Anstruther, Bart., elected as President.

The original 16 rules of the Club are given, as well as details of the discussion surrounding them. This included a debate about whether to allow women into the Club. While women were not disbarred, it was thought that Rule 14 (relating to the size of the horses) "would tend to discourage this admission".

The Minute book records all five meetings of the club, the routes taken and the members attending the meet, as well as notes taken of the committee meeting after each meet.

The minutes end after the fifth meet, with many blank folios left in the volume. The cessation of the Club could be linked to the death of Sir Windham Robert Carmichael-Anstruther, who died in October 1903 - the last entry on 15th September of that year notes the regret at the illness of the President.

Also loosely inserted is a circular letter to members about the 1902 Club dinner and a bill for printing the circulars dated 1903.
