Manuscript and typescript drafts, research materials, proofs and correspondence concerning 'The book of prefaces', by Alasdair Gray.
Scope and Contents
Drafts and working papers for 'The book of prefaces', by Alasdair Gray. In addition to drafts by Gray himself, the collection includes manuscript and typescript drafts by several other contributors to the book, as well as research notes and annotations by Gray's assistants.
The working title for this book, almost until the point of publication, was 'An anthology of prefaces', and this title is used interchangeably with 'The book of prefaces' throughout Gray's working papers. In the cataloguing of this collection, we have chosen to use what would be the final published title, 'The book of prefaces', in order to avoid confusion.
There are also some files of apparently unrelated material, mainly correspondence concerning other works or projects of Alasdair Gray.

Arrangement
The files at Acc.11769/1-27 originally comprised the entirety of this collection, before the files at Acc.11769/28-70 were added in two later batches of material. Therefore, files 1-27 were originally listed according to their own arrangement, before the later material arrived, and this later material was then arranged and listed separately. This means some related material appears in multiple locations across the collection.
Some material was previously housed in plastic pockets annotated by Alasdair Gray. For conservation purposes, these pockets have been removed and stored separately, and photocopies of the original annotations have been retained alongside the original material.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Bought, 1999, Alasdair Gray, Glasgow.
