Literary papers, correspondence and artwork of Alasdair Gray.
Scope and Contents
This collection includes personal and working papers of Alasdair Gray, with the great majority of the papers concerning 'A Gray play book' (Luath, 2009) and 'A life in pictures' (Canongate, 2009).
The 'play book' papers include typescripts from throughout Gray's life of many of the plays which made up the book, as well as annotated proofs, and correspondence concerning the book's production.
There are extensive visual materials collated by Gray for the production of 'A life in pictures', including photographs and transparencies of much of his visual art, as well as some original drawings and sketches. Visual materials relating to other books by Gray are also present, and arranged according to their original publication order.
There are also files of personal correspondence with family and friends, and several files of professional correspondence with publishers and agents which form a comprehensive portrayal of his publishing life in the 1980s and 1990s. Files relating to film and TV adaptations contain correspondence with multiple directors and producers concerning 'Poor things', 'Lanark' and others.
