Apparently incomplete collection of correspondence and papers of William Marshall and of members of his family, together with related papers compiled by David J Mackenzie, Sheriff-substitute of Glasgow.

Scope and Contents

William Marshall, who was factor to the Duke of Gordon, was known in his own day as a Scottish fiddler and composer of strathspeys, and an inventor. The collection contains almost nothing of musical interest, and the largest single part consists of letters and copies of letters of his sons whilst on active service in India and in the Peninsular War, written to him and to other members of the family.

Scope and Contents In the original inventory (a copy of which is at MS.3581, folios 6-7) signed by Thomas Ruddiman, then Underkeeper of the Library, the papers are listed in thirty-eight bundles. Most of these were arranged and bound during the period 1820-1849. Of the remainder, Adv.MSS.19.1.24 and 29.2.9a were bound in 1896, when it was not realised that Adv.MS.19.1.24 belonged to the collection. `Chronicle of Perth`, 1210-1668, also known as Mercer`s Chronicle and Fleming`s Chronicle, with other documents relating to the burgh of Perth.

Scope and Contents

The `Chronicle` was compiled probably between 1600 and 1668 by more than one person. Though attributed to John Mercer, town clerk of Perth, only the latter part appears to be his work. From 1660 it is almost entirely a register of burials.

Other items in the volume are a fragment of a legal memorial, circa 1597, concerning the foundation of the King James VI Hospital in Perth (folio 1), and a group of letters concerning Royal Burgh affairs (1614-1628), all copies (folio 20).

Scope and Contents

The collection consists chiefly of correspondence and papers relating to politics, especially colonial matters, and to estate and family affairs. Both Edward Ellice and his son were influential Liberal Members of Parliament who owned substantial estates in Scotland, Canada, America and the West Indies.

Scope and Contents

Robert Cadell (1788-1849) was the partner of Archibald Constable, and, after the dissolution of that partnership in 1825, the sole publisher of Walter Scott's novels. His papers reflect his personal and business relations with Scott and other authors, as well as his family affairs.

Scope and Contents

Most of the letters and memorandums, 1785-1794 are from the Earl of Mar, addressed apparently to the Earl of Seaforth (folios 13-67).

Also included are notes and copies of opinions, 1761-1820, on the succession to five peerages attainted in the 1715 and 1745 risings (folios 68-137), and miscellaneous notes, undated, on peerages (folios 1-12).

Letters and papers of Alexander Robertson of Strowan, the Jacobite.

Scope and Contents

Strowan`s own letters mostly concern his financial and legal affairs, but among those addressed to him are some from the Earl of Mar, written during and after the Rising of 1715, and from John Hay, Duke of Inverness. The papers also concern Strowan`s part in the Rising, and the pardon granted to him in 1731.
