Chapter headings lacking in the manuscript (MS.9831, folio 1) have been added, and chapters V-VII are drawn largely from the diary (MS.9829). A pencil note (folio i) states that the original was written between 1911 and 1914.

Many of his plays were popular with amateur dramatic groups.
