Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: Alexander Carlyle was engaged on his autobiography at various times during the last five, years of his life but at his death the narrative had reached only 1770. When it was published, in 1860, a supplemental chapter was added by the editor, John Hill Burton, to cover the remainder of Carlyle's life. The volume originally ended in 1769 (folio 46), the remainder beginning a new volume, but the covers and leaves were subsequently stitched inside the back cover. At folio 57 verso is a note on and a list of members of the Young Poker Club.
