Scope and Contents

The catalogue was apparently compiled shortly after 1716 (cf. folios 5, 34). There are frequent additions by the text-hand and others, both in the text and on the originally blank versos. The first leaf is missing. Comparison with the relevant part of MS.17863 shows that this catalogue is of part of the library at Saltoun.

The collection consists of manuscripts on a wide variety of subjects, many copied from manuscript or printed works, and chiefly dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Among them are some account-books, diaries, and other manuscripts of family interest (including a few concerning the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, father of the 6th Marchioness of Lothian), but very few letters.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: Auldbar was bought in 1753 by William Chalmers, a Gibraltar merchant whose family had owned land in Aberdeenshire, at Federate and Hazlehead. His father and brother were physicians in Aberdeen, and the papers as arranged below begin with medical records of these men.
