Scope and Contents From the Series:

The archive of the General Treasurer of the Free Church of Scotland, 1843-1900, with related papers including a few of slightly earlier and later date. The archive gives a complete picture of the financial basis of one of the most significant organised religious bodies in Scotland, from the Disruption to the first of the major Presbyterian reunions, dealing in great detail with the sources of finance and with its expenditure on a variety of projects.

Scope and Contents

The barony of Cowgask, known earlier as C(o)ulgask, was purchased in 1632 by Laurence Oliphant of Gask from the Earl of Montrose into whose family it had come after the forfeiture of the Earl of Gowrie. These deeds relate to the earlier owners.

Scope and Contents

These lands belonged originally to the Abbey of Inchaffray. They were broken up in the sixteenth century, mostly gathered together again by William Blair of Tarsappie in the first half of the seventeenth century, and purchased from him by Sir Laurence Oliphant of Gask in 1652. The majority of these deeds relate to the earlier owners.

Scope and Contents

The Murrays of Woodend were a cadet branch of the Murrays of Dollery. The last laird, Thomas, in 1691 disponed his lands to his brother-in-law, James Oliphant of Gask, in the event of his death without issue, which occurred in 1693. Much of the estate was sold in 1710 to Alexander Menzies of Garth.

Items 1-29 are legal documents; 30-40 concern early 17th-century family matters; 41-50 concern domestic Scottish affairs during the reign of Charles I, and 51-55 relate to events in the reign of Charles II.
