Diaries of Ruthven Todd, titled, 'Disintoxication in Spain'., 1965.

Scope and Contents

Ruthven Todd underwent treatment for alcoholism and kept a diary of his experiences and dreams while in hospital. He later rewrote this, intending to use the material for an article. MSS.26875-26876 contain the original diary; MSS.26877-26878 the revised version.

Scope and Contents These diaries, which were regarded by their author as of no value whatsoever, were preserved by his desire merely that his descendants might know something of the thoughts and feelings of one of their predecessors. They do not form a daily record, but consist of random reflections on current events, and a great many biographical and genealogical descriptions of families and individuals of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, chiefly in MS.1686, which has at the end a rough index of the persons...

Diaries of Sir Charles Dalrymple Fergusson., 1821, 1825.

Scope and Contents From the Series:

Sir Charles Dalrymple Fergusson (1800-1849), was the eldest son of Sir James Fergusson, 4th Baronet of Kilkerran, and Jean, second daughter of Lord Hailes. He inherited Newhailes in 1838 on the death of his aunt, Christian Dalrymple, when he assumed the additional surname of Dalrymple. Sir Charles was admitted Advocate in 1822, and in 1829 married Helen, daughter of David Boyle of Shewalton, Lord President of the Court of Session.

Diaries of Sir Thomas Frederick Elliot, chiefly detailing social engagements., 1840-1869.

Scope and Contents From the Series:

Sir Thomas Frederick Elliot, the son of Hugh Elliot, Diplomatist, spent his entire career either in or attached to the Colonial Office. In the 1830's he was in Canada for some years and his memoranda and correspondence for the period are of great interest. He was also involved in the organisation of the penal colonies, in emigration, and in the running of the Colonial Office itself.

Scope and Contents

The diaries consisting almost entirely of notes of engagements, kept in printed diaries ("The Minor’s Pocket-book", "The Ladies’ Polite Remembrancer", etc.). Down to Sophia Lockhart’s death in 1837, the entries are mostly by her.

Diaries, letter books and commonplace book, 1835-1884, of Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Malcolm (1782-1851) his sons, Rear Admiral George John Malcolm (1830-1884), and Pulteney Malcolm (1831-1852) of the Bengal Civil Service, and of George John Malcolm's wives, Ottonie von Dungern (1841-1866) and Sophie von Brockdorff (1846-1927).

Scope and Contents From the Series:

Born in New Zealand and educated in England, Sydney Goodsir Smith's first poems were in English, but he began writing in Scots in about 1940 and published several volumes of poetry. He also wrote for the stage, radio and television, as well as editing works of Robert Burns and Robert Fergusson. All these interests are reflected in his papers, but his work as an art critic survives in only a few fragmentary items.

Scope and Contents Though there are some gaps in the series, the diaries cover almost the entirety of the 4th Earl of Minto's career from his school days at Eton to the year before his death. Those from 1864 to 1868 cover his Cambridge days and several walking and climbing expeditions in Switzerland. From 1868 to 1876 he was largely occupied in training and racing horses. Thereafter, until his appointment to Canada, the emphasis is on public service at home, notably in the volunteer movement. The military...

Scope and Contents From the Series: Gilbert John Elliot Murray Kynynmound (1845- 1914), who was styled Viscount Melgund from 1859 and succeeded as Earl of Minto in 1891. He served in the army in the Russo-Turkish War, 1877, in Afghanistan, 1879, and in Egypt, 1882; from 1883 to 1886 he was Military Secretary to the 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, Governor-General of Canada, from 1898 to 1904 he was himself Governor-General of Canada, and from 1905 to 1910 he was Viceroy of India. Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

The collection consists of manuscripts on a wide variety of subjects, many copied from manuscript or printed works, and chiefly dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Among them are some account-books, diaries, and other manuscripts of family interest (including a few concerning the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, father of the 6th Marchioness of Lothian), but very few letters.
