The collection consists chiefly of correspondence and papers relating to politics, especially colonial matters, and to estate and family affairs. Both Edward Ellice and his son were influential Liberal Members of Parliament who owned substantial estates in Scotland, Canada, America and the West Indies.

The Jacksons journeyed through Saratoga, Lake George, and Lacine Rapids (Montreal) and arrived in Toronto on 21 September. They visited Niagara Falls and returned to America moving through Buffalo, Chicago, Minneapolis, St Paul, Pittsburgh, Washington...

Scope and Contents The volume consists of: (i) A copy of part of the diary, covering the period 18 March to 1 April 1886, of the earlier journey (folio 1); (ii) A complete copy of the diary of the later journey (folio 21); (iii) Some watercolour sketches made in India (folio 181 verso). The typed copy of the later journey was made in 1889 or 1890 for Elizabeth Burdon-Sanderson, whose signature dated May 1890 is at MS.20669, folio i. No doubt she was responsible for pasting in Jane's watercolour...
